Going Home

In three day’s time, at 8:27 p.m. here in Colorado, it will be the winter solstice. I’m aware of many celestial events as they transpire—full moons, equinoxes, mercury in retrograde, and much more. But I don’t feel them nearly so profoundly as I do the winter solstice.
Ancients saw it as the death and rebirth of the sun. And the Christmas holiday lands close enough to it that solstice celebrations have intermingled with the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Meanwhile, the calendar year is ending, and that brings its own implications for our lives.
If you strip away the religious beliefs and practices and the contemporary calendar for a moment, what’s left? What do you feel that is of this impending celestial event? And how would you describe that feeling?
Here‘s how it is for me. I want to stop what I am doing—walk away from it all. I want to go home.
Sometimes, people feel those things when they are ready to die. But that’s not what it is for me. I just want to go home. Take me!
It’s like some kind of huge heavenly tractor beam is pulling on my heart. Not exactly a beam me up, Scotty moment. But something like that.
I want to go home, only to wake up and find that I am at home right where I am—that the familiar people and places where I live take on a new feeling of peace and comfort.
