Contemporary scholars might scoff at this biblical tale of Jesus’s birth. And who knows how the idea crept into the story that Jesus was conceived in Mary without the benefit of union with Joseph. It certainly seems impossible to me.
I know that in some cultures, particularly in antiquity, people marvel at the fantastic. That happens in parts of the Western culture of today that we like to think of as advanced. And so, who knows how the fantastic crept into this story?
Some say it goes back to the mistranslation of a Hebrew word from an Old Testament prophecy describing the birth of Emmanuel as being from a “virgin,” when the original Hebrew word didn’t mean that at all. Perhaps a New Testament author or translator was trying to have Jesus live up to this mistranslation.
What interests me is why the Christmas Story has enchanted people through the ages. I don’t think it is mostly about the fantastic part. I think it is because it portrays a timeless principle of Creation. I’m not speaking to any historical implications here. Only on the symbolism of the story, and what it tells us about the Attunement process.
We are Mary. Our ability to bring forth new life depends on our openness to receive the Holy Ghost. This depends upon sacred space in mind and heart, and the atmosphere of sacredness that emerges from it. When that is in place, the holy power of Love may descend into us. The process is the coming of the Holy Ghost. When it comes, it conceives new life.
That new life can take almost any form. So, the application of this principle applies universally to the human experience—to every facet of our life, not only the birth of a child.
What is distinctive in this process is that the form born from it is holy. It is conceived by the holy creative presence within us. It is conceived in the sacred space we hold. And therefore, what is born carries the vibrational signature of what created it.
Even in the birth of a child, this principle is at work. Yes, there is a human father. But mother and father alike play a part in letting the Holy Ghost be invested in the newborn. At least, they do if they are participating in the timeless principles of Creation.
In this sense, we are each the mother of the new life—Mary. We prepare the space for the Holy Ghost to come upon us. This is receiving an Attunement.
