The Spirit of Ubuntu in Attunement
In us is Life, and we are part of the village of today.
Have you ever witnessed somebody in their magnificence and known a transcendent love? I have. In those moments, I glimpse the truth of our interconnectedness and the sacredness of Life expressing through another.
As Attunement practitioners, we have the golden opportunity to see Life in those who come to us for healing, support, and alignment. Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer is simply to recognize and honor the divine reality already present in another.
I had the wonderful gift of growing up near a river during my high school years. Almost every day, we would cycle down to the river and spend hours immersed in nature, finding refuge from the hurts, conflicts, and confusion of our culture. Here in South Africa, we legislated separateness through apartheid—an attempt to institutionalize “othering.” Yet, nature continually revealed another truth: we belong to one another.
Uranda cautions us to remain aligned with the natural divine pattern, lest conflict in human hearts and minds bring suffering and turmoil. The Principle of Reciprocity reminds us that what we accept for others, we accept for ourselves.
The spirit of Ubuntu expresses this beautifully: “I am because we are.”
In the spirit of Ubuntu, we might also say:
“I attune because we are. We are because Love is.”
May our Attunement this month become an offering that honors the divine presence within ourselves and within all those whose lives touch our own.

I AM. Loving the Spirit of Ubuntu. It seems that I, when lost from I AM is separation. A phrase came to me in a poem recently;- “We are out of the I AM.” I AM is Oneness. I’ve a tendency to go awol regarding vigorous massaging my own shadows, and aspects of the outer world. Yet now I embrace it all, communing with the Spirit beyond the forms, and knowing that I’m here to till, to transform through blessing, humility, joy and gratitude, as one of the true new village people, in the reality of Love. Thanks, Anne-Lise, for so beautifully bringing the spirit of Ubuntu into your own life and the lives of others around you. Because of apartheid South Africa has had much to overcome. But its emergence from that darkness has been made possible because of the Light that you and others are shining.
